GIVE, TAKE (September 5, 2009)

Miro Kopčalić, whom I call daddy, is one of the wealthiest people in Motovun, but everyone likes to tease him for his miserliness, which is legendary in town. One of his feats is to take the tip left on the table by someone else to help cover his own bill. As we were getting up after our morning coffee, a friend paid his bill and left the change on the table. When the waiter came along, he gave Miro one of the coins with a teasing smile. Miro stuffed it into his pocket without a word. “Daddy,” I pleaded with him, “put the money on the table.” He just giggled. The waiter then gave him another coin from his pocket, and Miro stuffed it again into his own pocket without a word. “Daddy,” I pleaded again, this time quite anxiously, “put the money on the table!” He kept giggling and started walking away. “I didn’t take the money,” he shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly, “he gave it to me!”
