BANANA: A LETTER TO THE ECONOMIST (June 3, 2009)
I could not suppress a giggle when I read in your special report about business in America that new construction is stymied there by an attitude among regulators and environmentalists known as BANANA (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone) (”Surviving the Slump,” May 30, 2009). Lucky America with its vast tracts of land! Anywhere else in the developed world, the closest one can get to such an attitude is good old NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard).
