TWO REASONS (July 20, 2008)

Born in Poland of Ukrainian parents, Pawlo Dlaboha entertained a bunch of us with jokes from the Soviet orbit. One of these I remember most fondly. The police caught a Jew escaping from the Soviet Union. “Why are you trying to escape?” they asked him. “I have two reasons,” he replied. “First, I know you will be blaming the Jews when the Soviet Union breaks apart.” The police officers shook their heads: “The Soviet Union will never break apart!” “Well,” said the Jew, “that’s my second reason.”
