FLOWER ARRANGING: A LETTER TO THE ECONOMIST (July 22, 2008)

The naïveté of your report on the demise of the United Nations’ attempt to isolate Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe for his despotic ways is quite disarming (“The Return of Mr. Nyet,” July 19, 2008). At the moment, there are three powers on earth—America, Russia, and China. What else but a nyet from Russia and China would you expect from the Security Council on a vote inspired by Britain and lead by, well, America? Would you really expect all those hapless countries on the Council to be working together for the common good of everyone on the planet? Do you really think the United Nations can do a thing in a world as fragmented as ours? If you do, try some other business, like flower arranging.
