THE PASSAGE (September 13, 2008)
Will Hughes is in Trieste as I write, where he just got off his motorcycle for a quick espresso, and he will be in Motovun in an hour or so for a late lunch. Phew! He left Reading last Wednesday morning, and it is Saturday afternoon already, which is how it will be on his return, as well. A day after he went through the Channel Tunnel, there was a big fire there, which most likely means that he will have to take a ferry back. It is drizzling in Istria and Northern Italy, but he says that strong winds are much more of a worry than the rain. Etc. In short, I feel ever-so-slightly guilty because of all this. Every few minutes I have to remind myself that this visit of his, his second on the motorcycle, is as much about his trip as about our friendship. No matter how grueling the passage, I bet Will loves every single second of it.
