ITS OWN WORST ENEMY (June 20, 2008)
Everywhere I look, capitalism is doing very well. In fact, it is doing splendidly. And nowhere I look do I see any resistance to capitalism’s headlong advance. Neither in theory nor in practice, to use the terminology of my youth, is there anything that could derail capitalism as it has come to pass. But, it suddenly crosses my mind, capitalism is its own worst enemy! Marx is my witness, too. So, let us watch it bring itself to its heels. Let us give it time. Let us do nothing whatsoever to help capitalism along by offering it even the slightest resistance. The cunning of reason at its most cunning. Thanks, Marx!
Addendum (November 10, 2016)
Ah, what a joy it is to read these words of wisdom, which I came across entirely by chance on one of my uncharted journeys through my writings! A few months after this piece was penned, the last financial crisis set in. It turned global in a jiffy. And it devastated everything in its path within months. Eight years later, the crisis is still far from over. Capitalism has tripped itself out of the blue, and it is anyone’s guess when it will right itself again and return to its headlong dash. Indeed, all that needs to be done is to abandon it to its own devices. The freer it gets, the faster it will trip itself anew, as well as the more spectacularly. Sooner or later, it will trip and crash for the very last time. In the meanwhile, mum is the word. Thanks again, Marx!
