TO MY SHAME (December 21, 2007)

I have felt a bit giddy ever since I woke up this morning. Unexplainable mirth. Bursts of joy provoked by mere trifles. Wellbeing out of season, in short. To my shame, it has taken me much of the day to figure out why this disconcerting change: it is the winter solstice, for crying out loud! The holiday celebrated but by a few weirdoes, it is one that needs celebrating in earnest, just as the summer solstice or the two equinoxes. All else that we consider dear is little but our own invention, our own vain contrivance. Battles, births, sundry deaths… The “natural” holidays are here since time immemorial, embedded in our very planet’s orbit around the sun, and it is thus high time for us to embrace them. To grab them heart and soul. As well as to feel giddy for no good reason. More, for no reason at all.
