THE COCONUT (August 10, 2007)
Two or three years ago an old friend brought a small coconut to one of my parties. It was not opened on the occasion, and so it lingered in my kitchen for all these years. The edible bit dried up long ago, whence a faint rattle whenever anyone would pick it up from the kitchen counter out of idle curiosity. This morning I decided to get rid of it at long last. And I hurled it into the bush that is much of my garden. As soon as it settled down, I was overcome by laughter. I imagined someone discovering it before it rotted away and looking uphill toward the houses in search of the mysterious palm tree. Do coconuts grow in Istria?
