OPINIONATED (August 15, 2007)
I was accused of being opinionated this evening. By a friend, of course. When I got back home, I checked the word in all the English dictionaries I could find in my library. The definitions I came upon were always surprisingly short. They were invariably split into two parts, too. The first part was almost the same throughout: ready to express one’s own opinion. Here I recognized myself without any difficulty whatsoever. The second part varied a great deal, though: stubborn in the defense of one’s own opinion, dismissive of other people’s opinion, uncritically adhering to preconceived notions, and the like. Here I had some trouble recognizing myself, with the possible exception of stubbornness. Well, I am rather dismissive of opinionated people, as well. Just like my friend, to be sure. All in all, much of what I found in the sundry dictionaries suited me quite fine. Call me opinionated, if you must.
