WHAT A BLOW (May 13, 2003)
I am flipping through today’s newspapers, which are all about the resignation of Clare Short from Blair’s cabinet, and her call for Tony to step down, as well. The headings blare: “Tony must go!” Suddenly, I remember my father: “What a blow that would have been for him!” The last year or two at home, before he ended up in a nursing home, each and every time the prime minister popped up on television, my father would beam: “Look, Tony!” And each and every time my mother would give me a god-help-us look: “He always says that!” Actually, all my father was trying to tell us was that he still recognized the prime minister. That he still knew his name. That he was not completely gaga. Not yet. Just imagine old Tony suddenly disappearing from the screen. Indeed, what a blow that would have been for my poor, demented father!
