THE SURFEIT HUMANITY (June 14, 2003)

The argument that men are a “surfeit” of sorts is becoming entrenched, especially among women in the so-called west. Men are becoming unsure of their biological status. The brunt of this line of reasoning is elsewhere, but it may be that many men have indeed been expendable ever since the species’ prehistoric dawn. They are born to die fighting other men. The surfeit exploded with the agricultural revolution, and the attendant mass armies. The proportion of dispensable men may well correspond to the “cannon fodder” of a century ago. In short, a good number of men are among the quick for no reason at all. They are surfeit for true. Perhaps only the black men in the States are properly represented in the population at large, as many of them are in jail or dead by the age of thirty. God only knows how many surfeit women are about, though. A good number of them are born to die in childbirth. Anyhow, we are now making do with all these excess people. Before the geneticists and demographers figure out the exact count, however, we had better abandon this argument when talking about any gender, ethnic group, or race in particular. By any serious count, only a small fraction of humanity does not belong to this category. And who is to tell about you and I? Or the great theoretician of surfeit, albeit of the wrong kind, Karl Marx?
