A COLLAGE OF MANY A COLORFUL BIT (June 13, 2003)
In this week’s Books and Arts Section, The Economist reviews two recent books about Eric Arthur Blair, better known as George Orwell (”The Master’s Voice,” June 14, 2003). The review itself is a good read, as is the memory of this monkish man with a rare gift with English. But one sentence struck me as particularly potent: “Shy in person, though vehement on the page, he could fairly describe himself as simultaneously a left-wing socialist, an anti-communist, and a Tory anarchist.” The first thought that crossed my mind upon reading this was that I would be quite happy to be thus described. But then I realized that this is perforce true of anyone of a free and hungry mind. How else would you describe such a person than as a collage of many a colourful bit? There are few like George Orwell, but then they are all alike.
