THE OLD CONTROVERSY (November 11, 2003)
Any discussion of Tlön’s appearance was bound to end in disagreement. Some thought him tall and fair, and others short and swarthy. Some thought him old and lean, others young and stocky. It was even worse with discussions of his demeanor. Some thought him haughty and aloof, others meek and warm. Some thought him witty and dashing, others dull and retiring. And yet, everyone was rather sure of his or her own views. By and by, people started wondering about these disagreements. Some thought he was a formidable actor, but there was no evidence of his acting skill or any props he might be using. Others thought Tlön was not alone, but he was never seen with anyone even similar to him. At long last, a small crowd gathered in front of his place, determined to clear things up once and for all, but they quickly learned that he was gone on one of his journeys. By the time he returned, few people remembered him, let alone that decisive gathering. It took a while for the old controversy about Tlön’s appearance and demeanor to gather momentum once again.
