THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD (June 5, 2003)

I now come to the office so early in the morning that I am not molested by traffic on my way from home. Except for an occasional postal van or truck, the streets are empty. The town is all mine. Besides, I am discovering unexpected pleasures. It is a joy to walk in the middle of the road that will get crowded in a few hours. Everything around me looks different from the new vantage point. And how did I come upon this little invention? I learned it from ducks, squirrels, seagulls. Before dawn, they take to the middle of the road, as well.
