ECONOMICALLY SPEAKING (June 4, 2003)
As some of my several pensions are kicking in already, and as many hypothetical figures in my income and outgo are firming up as I am nearing full retirement, it is increasingly clear that I would have been a fool to continue working and living in England. Economically speaking, that is. Now that I own in full my house in Istria, my assets tower above my liabilities. Similarly, my income towers above my outgo. In fact, I am better off than ever before pound for pound, euro for euro, dollar for dollar. There will be plenty of money to spare, which is quite a boon in view of the uncertain future. As my financial position brightens, I find myself increasingly cautious, though. What if some of the remaining unknowns in my accounts turn out to be unfavorable? What if economic conditions worsen in the years to come? But the main reason for caution is elsewhere. What if I become a smug asshole?
