SLIPKNOT (April 21, 2003)
As ever, most of my visit to Novi Sad was dedicated to eating and drinking, but whenever I would venture out of the dining room I would see the same graffiti on so many walls: “Slipknot.” And in English, of course. My hosts were surprised by the ubiquity of this inscription, for they had not noticed it ever before. I explained that a hanging noose would require a slipknot of sorts. None of us has had a clue about the origin of the graffiti, but the ominous word will nevertheless remain the hallmark of this visit to the second-largest city in Serbia. Perhaps we were eating and drinking a bit too much?
