FRIDA KAHLO, THE MOVIE (February 14, 2003)

Now, I have nothing against Frida Kahlo, the artist. Nor Madonna, her collector. Now Salma Hayek, her Hollywood representative. God bless them all. But enough is enough! Frida Kahlo was a nobody. Madonna is a nobody. Salma Hayek is a nobody. Whence Frida Kahlo, the movie? Put differently, how many nobodies does it take to make a somebody? Apparently, many. Too many! More precisely, nauseatingly many.

Addendum (December 20, 2019)

It takes feminism to come up with anything like Frida Kahlo. And it takes an entire swarm of feminists to make her into a saint of sorts. Amazingly enough, her once famous husband, Diego Rivera, is thereby relegated to the margins of artistic endeavor. Although his wife would have remained unnoticed without him, he has become a mere husband in the meanwhile. A major Mexican artist of his time, he has been sidelined, apparently forever. And all this thanks to so many ardent feminists, who would do anything in the book to bring yet another woman to the fore. By and by, men are sure to adopt women’s names to make it in this world of ours. A wig, a dress, a pair of shoes with high heels, and a little bit of makeup would only add to their chances. Cheerio!
