AGAINST THE STREAM (September 23, 2003)
People can be usefully divided into young and old. Even more usefully, they can be divided into dead and alive. All together, people thus split four ways. This is most useful, for it is not easy to fathom divisions more complex than these. Our brains are on the puny side. Wherever one goes, the living dead are most numerous, both young and old. Those both young and dead are most painful to meet, and those both old and alive bring greatest joy. Or hope, perhaps. Now, the less developed a region or country, the larger the group of those both young and alive. And vice versa, of course. The trouble is when you find yourself in a place that is developing at a clip. Those young and dead are ever more numerous, and those old and alive are ever fewer. Young or old, the best you can do is swim against the stream. As age is beyond your ken, at least you can strive to remain alive.
