WHIMPERING (December 27, 2000)

I left the door of my room open last night to better hear my mother, who had suffered yesterday from quite a bit of pain. I would wake up whenever she would get up to go to the toilet or to take another pain-killer. Each time, I would judge whether or not she needed my help. Early in the morning, half-awake, I saw my mother falling in a crowded store. People around her grabbed hold of her before she hit the floor. As she was falling, her face contorted with pain, she was whimpering in anticipation of the impact: “Yoy, yoy, yoy…” That is how one expresses pain in Serbo-Croatian.
