THE RATIONALE (December 19, 2000)

A nurse from the University Health Center called to arrange for a time tomorrow to come and take my mother’s blood. Knowing my mother’s schedule, I told the nurse to come in the morning. “When will she come?” asked my mother when I explained to her what the call was about. “In the morning,” I said. “Oh, good,” she said, “I was afraid she would come in the afternoon, when we have an appointment at the hospital, where…” “Mother,” I try to stop her, “mother, don’t worry—the nurse is coming in the morning!” My mother cannot accept an answer without offering the rationale for her question.
