PUBLIC, PRIVATE (December 19, 2000)
Even in England, the land of the reticent, one often witnesses public outbursts of women against their men. I just had such a pleasure. To the best of my understanding, the tiff was about infidelity. His infidelity, that is. The woman—an attractive blonde dressed to kill—yelled her head off in the middle of the crowded street: “Fuck off! I don’t want to see you ever again! Go to her, you fucking bastard!” Between sentences, she whimpered, as he danced around her, trying to calm her down. Why are men subject to such outbursts? The only rational explanation that comes to mind is that some women—or maybe most women—would not dare do anything of the sort in private because they would have to deal with their irate men all by themselves. In public, they are safe to accuse. They are safe to fulminate. In short, public outbursts of this kind may, in fact, be about men—violent men, that is—rather than their women.
