THE COOLEST OF THE COOL (August 21, 2000)

Hoxton Square: the coolest square in London. Hoxton Square Kitchen: the coolest eating and drinking place in Hoxton Square, next door to Jay Jopling’s White Cube Squared. This is where I met today with Dan Crowe, the editor of Butterfly. A Cardguide dispenser with free postcards on the wall: the coolest dispenser of advertising cards in town. Two columns of nine postcard pigeonholes, each one with a slot to display the card on offer in the pigeonhole behind it. Eleven out of eighteen of these display slots are empty, showing the steel background of the dispenser. The coolest of the cool in London—that is, the coolest of the cool on this cool planet—have no idea how to operate the free postcard dispenser: instead of the postcard in the pigeonhole, they take the display card itself. “Hey,” Dan grinned at me when I pointed this out to him, “you must write it up!” “Nah,” I grinned back at him, “I’m too cool for that.”
