SCRATCHING A LIVING (December 31, 2000)

It is freezing out there. The sky is low, grumpy. The snow that fell a few days ago has turned to gnarled ice. I am watching a pair of squirrels explore the trees lining the small parking lot in the back of our house. Of course, there is nothing there for them to eat. Never before have I seen a squirrel in these trees. The little buggers are darting from one branch to another to keep warm. Scratching a living.
