BOUNCING OFF (May 14, 2000)
Our friend was walking away from our house, which was surrounded by a large park. He wore an African scull-cap. It was bright yellow. It was dusk, but he was still visible, and especially his cap. In jest, I threw an empty can after him. I threw it high in the air. My intention was not to hit him, but my can landed on his head. “Poink,” I heard from the distance. He was already so far away that it was incredible that my can had reached him, let alone that it had hit him. He did not turn around or react in any way. He just kept walking. I told Lauren what had happened and then I threw another empty can at our friend, whose cap was still visible in the darkness. I threw it high in the air. He was very far away by then, but the second can landed on his head, too. “Poink,” we heard from the distance. Once again, he just kept walking. When I woke up, I realized that the sound of the can bouncing off our friend’s head would have come back with a slight delay on account of the growing distance. In my dream, it came back instantly.
