TOURISTS, MIGRANTS (October 24, 2015)
Today is the Sixth Teran and Truffles Festival in Motovun. It is Saturday, and the weather is superb. The sun is bright and the sky is blue. For all these reasons, hordes of tourists are all over the hilltown. Out of the blue, I confuse them with hordes of migrants that are streaming through Croatia on their way to Germany. Images of migrants are everywhere nowadays, but tourists are not very different when seen in large groups on the move. They must see or taste this or that. And they must do it as soon as possible, for there are many other places of note on their itinerary this very day. Which is why they look kind of grim. As well as resolute in their quest. There is no kidding with them, to be sure. Perhaps the only difference is that migrants do not take pictures of everything in sight, like tourists do. Anyhow, this is but a tiny medieval town. Tourists, migrants—what is the difference?
