“ARTIST AI WEIWEI BANNED FROM USING LEGO TO BUILD AUSTRALIAN ARTWORK” (October 24, 2015)
Thus The Guardian today. “Chinese artist says toy company told him it ‘cannot approve the use of Lego for political works’ ahead of exhibition at National Gallery of Victoria,” explains the newspaper. The artist’s accusation came just after the news that Merlin Entertainments, a British firm, will open a Legoland park in Shanghai together with a Chinese partner. The toymaker is expanding its presence in China now that its American market is slowing down. It has already invested a good deal of money into a new manufacturing facility in that country. In short, Ai Weiwei’s accusation has come at an unfortunate time for Lego. Its beguiling aura has been tainted once and for all. Alas, toys are products like any others. And profit comes well ahead of everything else when it comes to products of any kind. Amen.
