THE MOTOVUN ZOO (August 17, 2015)
It has been raining off and on since yesterday morning. Some parts of Istria have been hit by torrential storms, but most of the peninsula has been drenched by now. The rainy period will last for a few more days, too. Bewildered by the weather, tourists are driven away from the beaches along the Istrian coast. They are traipsing hither and thither in search of interesting places to see. Every tourist attraction is jam-packed by now. And so is Motovun, picturesque as it undoubtedly is. I have not seen so many people wandering around the hilltown since last summer, when July and August were unusually wet. Every street and square is swarming today. Restaurants, cafés, and shops are crowded with tourists, who are taking pictures of everything under the sun. Bored to death, the children are screeching their heads off, and their parents are drifting around as if in deep trance. In a word, it is a zoo. Protected by a large umbrella, I am strolling through it with a big smile on my face. I do not remember that I have had so much fun watching the tourists since last summer. On a day like this, the Motovun zoo is the place to be. And watching tourists adrift is enormous fun, indeed.
