THE GOOD OLD AFTERNOON NAP (July 8, 2015)
According to the meteorologists, the current heatwave will be reaching its climax today. Rain is expected this evening, and it may come with a heavy storm. It will be appreciably cooler by tomorrow morning. But the hottest afternoon hours are still ahead. The best I can do right now is to take a shower and lie down. The bedroom is dark, and my futon is waiting. Mrtasana or savasana is the best posture. Lying on my back, I will relax all my muscles. My palms turned toward the ceiling, I will close my eyes and start breathing regularly. In a short while, I will clear my mind of all thoughts. And the afternoon heat will disappear as if by magic soon afterwards. Whenever I become briefly aware of my body, I will be surprised by the coolness enveloping me. After some time, I may fall asleep while lying on my back. By the time I wake up half an hour later, I will be in the best of shapes. Getting up from the futon, I will shake my head in awe of the simplicity of it all. The Mediterranean and India have so much in common. There is a touch of yoga to the good old afternoon nap.
