MUSICAL CHAIRS (July 9, 2015)
The Greek financial crisis has been in the news for ever and ever. Its intensification the last few weeks is only a small part of the ongoing show. Every single idea on how to solve the crisis has been offered in the fullness of time, but to no avail. This also holds for the best financial newspapers on offer. But the Financial Times has just come up with a picture that sums up years of experience with Greece. It shows six European politicians, including the prime minister of Greece, walking around four chairs. Their heads are larger than their bodies, showing that this is a cartoon of sorts even though it is made up of photographs. Largest of all the politicians in the picture, whose head is also oversized, is the German chancellor playing a piano. Musical notes are coming out of the instrument. What is the picture hinting at? Musical chairs, of course. When the music stops, two of the politicians walking around the chairs will be eliminated from the game, and one of the chairs will also be removed. The music will resume until there is only one player left. Who will it be? The piano player, it goes without saying. At long last, the protracted game is perfectly clear for all to see. It is a great pity that it cannot be expressed in words.
