THE AFTERNOON HEAT (July 18, 2015)

While taking my afternoon nap, which took a bit less than a hour, I saw a large seagull flying with a child of three or four in its tow. The child was holding gently onto the bird’s legs, and it was clear that the two were friends. There was a slight breeze, and the seagull sailed without flapping its wings. The child appeared to be very light, and it sailed in the breeze, as well. It was a wonderful scene. I realized it was quite improbable only when I woke up. It was the afternoon heat that had made the dream possible. When I got up, I checked the thermostat on the ground floor of my house. It was twenty-eight degrees Celsius and a half. Only half a degree short of the highest temperature I have ever witnessed in the house. And it was just past five o’clock, a bit less than four hours before sundown. Another record day, for sure.
