READY TO DRINK (November 11, 2015)

It is Saint Martin’s today, and I find myself remembering the taste of Benjamin Pahović’s Teran of this year. The grapes were picked two months ago. He let me taste of the new wine a week ago, and it was ready to drink. Actually, it was superb. “De San Martin el mosto se fa vin,” I quoted an old Venetian proverb as I smacked my lips. Benjamin chuckled, for the proverb was popular in Istria of his youth, as well. Climate change will make it obsolete soon enough, though. In a few short years, Teran will be ready to drink a fortnight ahead of Saint Martin’s. But the peninsula may well turn out to be too hot for any sort of wine in no more than a couple of decades. Which makes the taste of Benjamin’s Teran even more memorable on this special day. If there is the right time to relish it, it is surely right now. Cheers all around!
