ON MISMATCHED MONTHS (December 3, 2015)

Unseasonable weather has started surprising me some years ago, but the number of surprises has grown over time, and so I have gotten into a habit of writing pieces with mismatched months in the title. “August in March” or “December in July,” for example. Having written many pieces of this kind, I assumed there have been quite a few such titles already. But when I searched through my magnum opus for all instances of this ilk, I was surprised one more time, for there have been not too many of them. Only eleven, as a matter of fact. And here is the full list of them, in chronological order: “October in June” (June 15, 2008); “November in May” (May 24, 2013); “May in February” (February 16, 2014); “May in March” (March 17, 2014). “November in June” (June 3, 2014); “October in August” (August 5, 2014); “October in August, Again” (August 16, 2014); “October in August, Again and Again” (August 23, 2014); “September in November” (November 16, 2014); “May in November” (November 16, 2015); and “April in December” (December 2, 2015). I was kind of sure there were between twenty and thirty of them, but I was not right. Also, I was almost certain that such titles stretched over many more years, but I was wrong again. At any rate, the list shows that many mismatched months are yet to be covered in the years to come. Thus I will keep writing pieces with titles of this sort. Predictably, I am eager to come up with the most stunning mismatches, like the two examples above. Mother Nature will oblige in the fullness of time. For she simply must.
