Rajendra Pachauri is in the news. The head of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change since 2002 has resigned from his duties due to sexual harassment allegations he now faces in his native India. He is seventy-four years of age, and the police is currently investigating a complaint from a woman working in his office in Delhi. She is twenty-nine, and her lawyers say that the harassment included unwanted electronic-mail and mobile-phone messages. The secretary general of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, will now need to select another head for the IPCC. The resignation is a shock, but most analysts currently believe that it will not create lasting damage to the panel. One cannot but hope that this is the case. Only imagine sexual harassment getting in the way of the work of a major international effort to deal with climate change! It boggles the mind, to say the least. Given the way the human mind works, though, this is hardly a preposterous possibility. And especially at this crazy day and age. It would not be surprising if many people around the world would now be weary of taking part in any serious effort to deal with the greatest threat humanity has ever faced. And all this on account of some unwanted electronic-mail and mobile-phone messages!
