NO GAP (October 29, 2015)

We just got up, and both my No. 1 son and I are checking the news on our laptops. As it happens, we both have Mac Book Air computers. They look identical, but his is of more recent vintage. He is watching the key moments in yesterday evening’s Republican presidential debate. I am not watching it with him, but I can hear it perfectly well as I am browsing through online editions of my favorite financial newspapers. Every time any one among the candidates says anything the audience likes, there are loud cheers and screams. Or there are loud boos if they do not like it. There is no gap between his words and their reaction. The reaction is instantaneous. “Hey,” I react at last, “are these monkeys in the audience?” And then I explain that only monkeys would react this way when a banana is tossed their way. My son chuckles, but keeps quiet. “Trump is their man,” I mumble by way of conclusion. “The monkeys understand him perfectly.”
