MY OWN STATION (June 24, 2015)

While I am in Motovun, each afternoon I spend an hour or two on the hotel terrace. When it is hot, there is no better place in the hilltown. As soon as I sit down, I look up the chestnut trees that surround me and take a deep breath. What a joy it is each and every time! Looking up the trees, which are at least eighty years old, I relish the intense green of the leaves, the many gnarls of the branches, and the blue of the sky beyond. When I sat down a short while ago, though, I unexpectedly imagined myself above the chestnut trees. I was looking down through leafy crowns this time around. But I corrected myself in a jiffy. The right way to look at these marvelous trees is from the ground up, I reckoned. Looking down was not to my liking. Having corrected myself, I relished my view of the trees even more than ever before. Looking up, I can appreciate my own station, too.
