MOTOVUN’S CAPACITY LIMITATIONS (May 20, 2015)
I lunch at Benjamin’s, the best restaurant in Motovun. A month or two before and after the busiest part of the tourist season, Benjamin’s is closed on Wednesdays, and so I lunch at the hotel terrace on that day only. The hotel’s restaurant is getting better and better from year to year, too. When I came to the hotel terrace today, there was not a single table to be had. A few busloads of tourists were already there and waiting for their lunch. The hotel staff was running hither and thither helping the waiters, and I quickly realized my lunch was not to be. The restaurants on the lower square were jammed, as well. All the waiters were moving about at full speed. Benjamin’s tables were also full, but they were taken by a busload of school kids on excursion. And so I went home for something to eat. On my way, I wrote a mobile-phone text-message to my beloved. “For crying out loud,” I concluded my lament, “it’s not even the end of May!” Judging by today’s crowds, the busiest part of the tourist season is likely to be a nightmare for the few hilltown survivors, like myself. Motovun’s capacity limitations will have to be seriously considered by the municipal administration. Not even the tourists themselves will appreciate allowing too many of them into the medieval town at the same time. The latecomers will never forget the pangs of hunger, either.
