MERKELN (September 25, 2015)
For some years now, the German dictionary publisher Langenscheidt also publishes a dictionary of jargon used by the German youth. In addition, each year they select the Jugendwort or the “youth word of the year.” The winning word this year is the verb merkeln, which means “to do nothing, make no decisions, issue no statements.” Apparently, it is rather popular with the German youth. Indeed, Angela Merkel is famous for her wait-and-see approach. She hesitates before reacting publicly, often for considerable periods. Her treatment of refugees streaming toward Germany has brought her propensity to the fore. At first she invited them, only to close Germany’s borders. As well as to open them again, but only ajar. Lines of refugees stretch to the horizon, but all she does is keep mum and move not a finger. Whence the new verb. But it is good to remember that Angela Merkel is much more than the German chancellor at this juncture. Not for nothing is she is also known as Frau Europa. And the refugee crisis is the proof positive of her title to the subcontinent.
