JOINING THE CROWD (July 1, 2015)

One of my goals is to minimize contact with my fellow humans, but there are limits to what I can achieve from day to day. I have to eat and drink, for instance. Either I must go to a restaurant I find to my liking, or I must go to a grocery store within walking distance to buy food and beverages. When I am alone at home in Motovun, I cannot but hear passers by. Either on foot or sitting in their cars, they are loud enough. Even in the middle of the night, I can hear airplanes flying over my house. Although I do my best not to be annoyed by all these noises, I am very well aware of them all. Actually, I pay them due attention day in and day out. During the day, I often find it most propitious to sit in one of the places where people surround me from all sides. Right now, I am sitting on the hotel terrace, and all the tables around my own are teeming with people. They are talking and laughing, coming and going, but I take it all as a movie utterly irrelevant to me. As I am writing, I am occasionally interrupted by waiters rushing past and by people arriving or departing. But I am completely alone. As I keep putting my sentences together, I follow my story with great care. And all I am actually trying to say is that there are many ways of minimizing contact with fellow humans. Some if them are nigh paradoxical at first sight. In my own case, one of the most effective ways of keeping to myself is by joining the crowd. The thicker, the better.
