Thus the front cover of the May and June issue of the MIT Technology Review, which reached me by mail this morning. The cover shows an infant with blue eyes and blond hair. The background is pale blue, as well. I almost laughed when I pulled the review out of my post office box. “Would that humans could make themselves more intelligent,” I mumbled. The article referred to on the cover is a bit more modest in its claim. “Engineering the Perfect Baby,” runs the title. And the byline is even more reserved in tone: “Scientists are developing ways to edit the DNA of tomorrow’s children. Should they stop before it’s too late?” There is some way between a perfect baby and an entire race, but I still went for the article. Sadly, it ends up by focusing on moral issues surrounding genetic engineering. I can imagine many a Christian fundamentalist in the States going berserk over the review’s front cover. My problem is entirely different, though. I just cannot believe that a race as stupid as homo sapiens can come up with a race more intelligent than itself. Alas, my problem concerns logic rather than silly old ethics! I can already see all the believers yawning their heads off.
