Animals other than humans can be puzzling, distracting, annoying, disquieting, frightening, and on occasion even disgusting, but they can never be discouraging.

What is more, humans are discouraging often enough, if not rather regularly. Besides, they are also disheartening, demoralizing, daunting, disturbing, dispiriting, dismaying, and depressing. Which only goes to show that they are quite special among the animals. Rule of the roost, as it were. Whence so much pride among humans, and especially the most discouraging among them. Rulers of this world come to mind at once. And the Donald tops them all in a jiffy, as only befits America—the land of opportunity. By comparison, animals other than humans fade into insignificance. No wonder many of them are now facing extinction…
