CONTEMPORARY KITSCH INCARNATE (July 19, 2015)

Tourists who come to Motovun tell a great deal about contemporary tastes in the rich world. Even more, they are contemporary kitsch incarnate. Their tattoos are amazing to behold, indeed. A growing number of people are displaying their tastes on their very bodies. Here is an elaborate flower, there a bunch of Chinese characters rendered cute, and over yonder an ornate cross for all to see. Entire arms, chests, and backs are covered with tangled doodles, many of which are in color nowadays. And so are feet, calves, and thighs. The bearers of tattoos are not aware of what they are saying about this world of ours, and so the kitsch spills out unhampered. Especially in the summer, it is loud and clear. Those who are rich enough to be tourists are ever brassier about their glorious selves. And thus they spread their working class and petty-bourgeois tastes across the globe with gusto. Alas, I have not seen one single tattoo that shows the slightest influence of Mondrian, Kandinsky, and Malevich. An entire century later, they are still far from contemporary tastes. And blossoming tattoos are my witnesses.
