A SMALL CURIOSITY (November 29, 2015)
I checked “climate change” on Google Trends earlier this year, and yesterday I checked it again to see the recent changes (“Google Trends: Climate Change,” February 23, 2015). Although Paris climate talks are arousing some attention around the world, the interest is rather weak, and so I wrote an addendum about the human propensity not to worry about a threat until it is too late to do anything about it. Having posted it on the World Wide Web, I sent an electronic-mail message with a link to the piece to a couple of colleagues from the Croatian Climate Change Panel. “A small curiosity,” I commented the link pithily. I found Zoran Skala’s response this morning. He agrees with me, but he adds that major corporations are doing everything in their power to deflect the interest in climate change, as well as to make money from it in the bargain. He also sent me a couple of good readings about corporate shenanigans of this ilk. Of course, not only corporations are detracting attention from climate change. Governments and churches are doing it, too. “Still,” I just responded to his message, “only dunces can be influenced by such tricks.” Indeed, it boggles the mind what sort of crap humans can take to serve interests that are far from their own. It is enough to remember all forms of racism, nationalism, chauvinism, religious intolerance, and other forms of prejudice to give up all hope for the species. And yet, one keeps hoping for a miracle…
