“WILL POPE FRANCIS’ ENCYCLICAL BECOME HIS ‘MIRACLE’ THAT SAVED THE PLANET?” (June 19, 2015)

Thus The Guardian today. “The clearest and loudest moral case yet for action now, firmly rooted in justice for the world’s poor, could galvanize the world to act on climate change,” elaborates the newspaper. This is nothing but wishful thinking, just like the encyclical itself. To begin with, there are no miracles, for there is no divinity to make them. More important, no case, moral or otherwise, will ever galvanize the world to act any which way. Besides, the time to act has past long, long ago. In fact, this happened long before climate change became even noticed by humans, let alone acknowledged by them as a threat. As ever, the time to act will come when climate change becomes unbearable, which will happen at different times at different places. Once millions of people start to move from one place to another, the mayhem will trigger wars that will eventually combine into World War III. The humanity will emerge from the natural and manmade calamity not only in considerably smaller numbers, but also in another world—the world of feudalism. But climate change will keep raging, and the human race will descend deeper and deeper into its own past. Enough, though. I am repeating myself, and for who knows what time.
