June 15, 1215, is indeed the date, but the charter had to do with bringing a respite in the strife between an unpopular king and a bunch of rebellious barons. The charter took some years to get hammered down, and even the pope got involved in the process. But liberty in the sense of the article in one of the top American newspapers is still a pipedream for anyone else but the king and the barons of our day. Only they enjoy the rule of law, and only in the limit. Celebrating the eight-hundredth anniversary of this makeshift agreement between the potentates is but a residue of the American dream of yesteryear. Forget it, fellow Americans! What is meant for the king and the barons will never be yours. Dreams are forever dreams, after all.
