MY VALENTINE (February 14, 2013)
When my beloved wished me a happy Valentine’s half in jest this morning, my thoughts immediately wandered to Klaudio Ivašić, an erstwhile friend from Motovun. It is his birthday today. Between 2002, when I bought my house in the hilltown, and early 2009, when local elections took shape, I used to spend a lot of time at Klaudio’s, the oldest café in Motovun. Things have changed, though. We turned out to be on different sides four years ago, when crooked golf divided the hilltown rather sharply. I stopped going to his café and his restaurant, which he opened a few years earlier. Soon enough, he and his family stopped responding to my greetings. Looking back, I cannot but feel a bit nostalgic about the good old years. It was fun while it lasted, and it was nigh impossible to predict what would follow. Anyhow, Klaudio is my Valentine this morning. Or is it Motovun? Would that it had remained in one piece four years ago.
