DELIGHTED AND REASSURED (February 19, 2013)

This morning I found a feedback message from Jennie Winter, who must have spent some time reading my Residua yesterday evening. Together with her then husband, who died in the meanwhile, she used to be my next-door neighbor in Reading. Together with my then wife, we were pretty good friends, too. “I’m delighted and reassured that you haven’t changed!” she opened her message. And then she continued with a few reassuring words about her own troubles with Inland Revenue in Britain. “Indeed,” I just responded, “I haven’t changed much. Why should I, anyhow?” As for the plight of pensioners, all I had to say was that Inland Revenue people at least responded to questions from concerned citizens, which would be quite unimaginable with the tax authorities in Croatia. Pensioners all around the world are up shit creek, at any rate. But enough about taxes! Jennie and her new husband may visit me in Motovun later this year. If they come over from Italy, where they will have their vacations, there will be much laughter, I am sure. By the way, what else can pensioners do when they get together after so many years?
