ZAGREB IS BURNING (July 3, 2012)
It is so hot that my favorite watering holes in the Croatian capital are hardly appealing. One has a couple of fans high above, another has nothing, and the third has a poorly conceived air-conditioning system that provides no relief whatsoever. Which is why the only shelter I can find is in my beloved’s apartment. Although the air-conditioning unit she has inherited from the previous owner is sufficient to cool only our bedroom, this is quite a blessing still. Like in Motovun, I find myself cooped up in a dark bunker once again, but this time around it is so deliciously cool that I do not dare think about going out at all. Why bother? Zagreb is burning, after all. If weather forecasts are to be trusted, though, we will have a storm later today. It will be raining tomorrow, as well. But these are nothing but forecasts. Only air-conditioning can really be trusted.
