I often kid Ljubica Handjal that she is the best looking woman in upper Borgo. At eighty-five, this is far from a mean feat. Of course, upper Borgo is poorly defined. For instance, does it go all the way to Renata Vrtarić’s house, which is three houses down from Ljubica’s? At fifty-one, Renata might beat Ljubica in someone’s mind. But I am not kidding about Ljubica when I kid her about her unsurpassed beauty. The kidding is about Borgo, as a matter of fact. Upper or lower, it is nigh deserted by now. Old women are its main surviving inhabitants. As are street cats. Although some houses up and down the street are rented out during the summer months, most of them are empty during the rest of the year. The way things are going, Ljubica may soon become the best looking woman in Motovun, as well. Once again, I am not kidding about her. Not at all. For crying out loud, Ljubica is my friend.
