UNDER CONTROL (December 8, 2012)
It started snowing late yesterday evening. It snowed all night. And it is still snowing this morning. Zagreb has come to a standstill. Few people are out and about, for the snow has not been cleared from most pavements. The snow is on the wet and slippery side, too. There are hardly any cars in the street, either. There are few snow-ploughs around, and it must be dangerous to drive. As the wind is rather strong, it is not very pleasant out there, and especially when one is walking into the wind. The snow turns into ice on your face surprisingly quickly. Most people are carrying umbrellas for this reason, but the wind is making them quite awkward to carry around. All in all, the day is special. It feels as though the whole world has come to a standstill. If it keeps snowing for a few more days, this feeling will turn kind of nasty. It is exciting for the time being, though. Looking out through the window, one feels ever-so-slightly victorious. From the comfort of one’s home, the snow is under control, as it were.
Addendum (December 9, 2012)
It stopped snowing yesterday afternoon. The sky cleared overnight. There is not a cloud in the sky this morning. The wind has died down, as well. Although it is still nippy, the snow is melting at a clip. There is much slush everywhere, but there are patches of ice wherever the sun cannot reach. As one walks around and admires the sunshine, one had better look down in front of oneself every now and then.
