TOURISTS IN THE RAIN (August 31, 2012)
Motovun is packed with befuddled tourists today. Umbrella in hand, I have made many a tour of the hilltown just to observe them first hand in their discomfiture. When the rain subsides a little, they waddle around in their beachwear. And they look for shelter as soon as it gets stronger again. Few among them dressed for a wet day, they look hither and thither in expectation of some distraction. Anything would do. Those with small children are utterly lost. Used to new freedoms on the beach, the little ones are distraught under their parents’ unending watch. It takes a stern look or a harsh word for them to start wailing disconsolately. Screeching ensues often enough. Packed in a few tight places, everyone is at children’s mercy, not just their bewildered parents. By and by, tourists in the rain are becoming a tourist attraction in its own right. Whence my many tours, umbrella in hand. Not to mention a barely visible smirk on my face.
